Clean Ammonia

Getting industry to rea ch their net-zero emission targets requires vast amounts of clean energy. Domestic sources of renewable energy cannot fully cover this demand. Green hydrogen imported from places with abundant renewable sources could supplement the energy mix. Hydrogen’s characteristics however bring along several challenges. Clean ammonia has the potential to overcome these challenges, and even more so bring new decarbonizing opportunities to industry and the energy system as a molecular feedstock.

The Clean Ammonia Innovation Platform brings together stakeholders to address these questions and form a future landscape for ammonia.

An industrial perspective

Much is yet unknown on the potential clean ammonia has in decarbonizing industry. But, by combining insights from industrial actors from across the likely value chains estimates on this capacity can be made. In a first effort, the Clean Ammonia Innovation Platform has published the Clean Ammonia Roadmap Report. In this report the first outlines of an decarbonized ammonia economy are etched.

A critical aspect of these value chains is the transportation of ammonia. The ongoing Ammonia Pipeline Safety study is addressing this, with findings expected by first quarter of 2025.

Working together to drive innovation

The build-out of this supply chain from classic commodity use for e.g., fertilizers, to a new role as key energy vector in the hydrogen economy or marine fuel also brings many new challenges. For example on safety, technology availability, and on the use of ammonia in new applications. The challenges posed by this growth are experienced broadly. Therefore, it makes sense to join hands and confront the challenges together in the Clean Ammonia Innovation Platform.

The Clean Ammonia Innovation Platform strives to be an open, trust-based environment to explore opportunities to start innovation projects. The innovation program will focus on 3 main pillers: technical, economical and societal. The platform also helps to facilitate the connection with a large network of experts across the value chain to help with the development and exchange of knowledge. Ultimately, the joint activities and exchanges of knowledge can be translated into action towards impact on decision-making for clean ammonia and it’s developments.

The key functions of the platform and ISPT are:

  • Coordination for innovation: from idea to execution leading to tangible results for industry and society
  • Leverage of strategic intelligence leading to successful business
  • Project identification and development

This will be done through the key activities:

  • Building a Clean Ammonia community and network to exchange knowledge and needs between partners along the value chain to support the energy transition with clean ammonia.
  • Cooperating in Platform activities to support the public understanding and acceptance about clean ammonia as energy and hydrogen carriers in the energy transition.
  • Working towards innovation projects with mutual interests among the Partners.

Join us

As interest in clean ammonia rises both nationally and internationally, the Clean Ammonia Innovation Platform is expanding rapidly. International partners are already joining this open platform, collaborating to exchange knowledge, launch new projects, and drive strategic business success.

We are actively seeking partners to help shape the future of clean ammonia. Over the next 2 years, the Clean Ammonia Innovation Platform will embark on innovative projects focused on industrial applications of clean ammonia, pushing the boundaries of renewable energy solutions while addressing critical public safety concerns. Would you like to join us in this transformative journey?

This is your opportunity to collaborate, share expertise, and play a pivotal role in the success of this emerging field.

The Clean Ammonia Innovation Platform unites Dutch industry leaders to explore the decarbonization potential of clean ammonia in a trust-based environment coordinated by ISPT. If you’re interested, we invite you to join us. For inquiries, please contact Carol Xiao at carol.xiao@ispt.eu
