The Clean Ammonia Innovation Platform (CAIP) – an initiative by ISPT and Dutch industrial organizations – is a dynamic platform that challenges forward-thinking professionals to contribute to shaping a sustainable future. CAIP is expanding rapidly and is looking for more partners to join us in driving positive change. Over the next 2 years, we will launch new projects focused on clean ammonia applications in industry, contributing to breakthrough developments in renewable energy solutions while also addressing public safety concerns related to ammonia.
Why clean ammonia?
The industrial sector faces a monumental challenge in reducing carbon emissions. This involves rethinking not only energy sources but also raw material inputs. In North-West Europe, renewable energy sources are both scarce and costly. However, imported clean ammonia presents a promising solution, offering potential as hydrogen carrier, energy source and feedstock.
Ammonia (NH3) is a well-established molecule in the chemical industry, with over a century of use in fertilizer production. It is economically favourable compared to other hydrogen and energy carriers, and the existing infrastructure and expertise make it a strong candidate for developing new value chains. ISPT’s Clean Ammonia Innovation Platform has spent the last 2 years mapping out these potential value chains. The results are detailed in the Clean Ammonia Roadmap Report, published in early 2024.
A critical aspect of these value chains is the transportation of NH3. The ongoing Ammonia Pipeline Safety study is addressing this, with findings expected by first quarter of 2025.
What’s next?
As interest in clean ammonia rises both nationally and internationally, CAIP is expanding rapidly. International partners are already joining this open platform, collaborating to exchange knowledge, launch new projects, and drive strategic business success.

Over the next 2 years, CAIP will embark on innovative projects focused on industrial applications of clean ammonia, pushing the boundaries of renewable energy solutions while addressing critical public safety concerns.
