The Circular Plastics Initiative (CPI) would like to invite you to a workshop on Design for Recycling (DfR) of plastics and focused on the other compounds in plastics than polymer, and their influence on the recycling of plastics.
This CPI workshop is part of the reflection of our Roadmap discussion. This way we intent to develop new projects within our program for the benefits of our partners. So, your input for this workshop can be important to reach your own goals. As well as common goals for the circularity of plastics.
Following the ladder of Lansink, there will be plastics and plastic products that will be mechanically recycled, as well as plastics that will (only) be fit to be recycled chemically or thermochemically. Optimizing mechanical recycling is the focus for research. Influencing factors here, among others, are regulatory approval, and development of (food contact material and other) regulations. Underneath you find the description and goal of the workshop.
A focus on the other compounds in plastic than the polymer, and their influence on the recycling of plastics.
The current focus on design for recycling prioritizes on design of the products. For example: sleeves instead of labels and prints, and mono-material instead of multi-material. There is less focus on the design of the content. Meaning the relationship between the polymeric matrix and the additives, pigments, and other relevant compounds that limit recycling processes.
During the workshop, we will discuss this matrix interaction in context with recycle options. The goal is to give direction towards project ideas, that can be worked out later with dedicated partners.
To give this direction, we have invited the following speakers:
Chris Bruijnes | Director at Kennisinstituut Duurzame Verpakkingen
Who will address the current questions plastic producers have and to emphasize the relevance for developing more knowledge and understanding on this theme.
Steven de Meester | Professor at Ghent University
Who will focus on research on delamination and de-inking for recycling processes.
Karleinz Hausmann | Sr. Advisor at Dow Europe
Who will focus on polymeric compatibilizers/adhesives/inks and pigments impact on recycling from a polymer producers perspective
Nikola Juhasz | Global Technical Director, Sustainability at Sun Chemical
Who will focus on the development of new inks/coatings/adhesives
Dr. Nicolas Mys | Product Development Engineer at Amcor
Who will address this from a converters perspective
Hans Werink | Global Product Manager at Holland Colours
Colorants and additives in recycling
In this workshop we try to identify the white spots within the matrix interaction of other compounds than polymers within plastics and recycling processes. This picture is needed to take the next steps, where we invite you to collaboratively define the scope for a potential project. Based on that we facilitate the submission of a project proposal in a short to midterm period, using the best available and suited granting scheme.
If you wish to participate in this workshop, please fill in the invitation form, and you will be invited to the online session.
