Over 140 experts, business leaders, pioneering thinkers, partners, stakeholders and academics from the field of circular plastics gathered to formulate the next steps in closing the loop before 2050 \u267b<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Circular Plastics Conference &#8217;22<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>During the event we have underlined the enormous value of plastic in our society, while at the same time acknowledging the reality of litter, landfills, and the environmental impact that plastics have. It is time to move from a linear system of production based on fossil fuels to one based around a closed circular system. In such circle, plastics will be made from recycled materials and CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions will be drastically reduced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-27635c07-27b7-4f98-b8a0-f524a065ecda\">To realize a circular plastics future, the Circular Plastics Conference paid attention to all interdependent areas in the plastics value chain. From&nbsp;sorting and washing, to recycling, and production. For each of these, we have discussed challenges, opportunities and new technological developments.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/CPC22?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#CPC22<\/a>  Ingeborg Gort from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CIRCOnl?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@CIRCOnl<\/a>  kicks off the Design for Recycling Workshop: \u201cCircular design is the engine for creating business in the circular economy.&quot; More at  \u00bb <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/FppOpzQFbb\">https:\/\/t.co\/FppOpzQFbb<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/48YEAmuc0C\">pic.twitter.com\/48YEAmuc0C<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Institute for Sustainable Process Technology (@ISPT_ProcessTec) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ISPT_ProcessTec\/status\/1526897096489635840?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 18, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-0da0b98a-0c1f-4d32-a56f-9f31c1953cbd\">Day 1<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-e6ab74fe-dfad-4979-8c85-0b73d1fbb6d2\">To develop a <strong>new circular plastics system<\/strong> and make the plastic value chain more sustainable we will use the conditional grant of The <a href=\"https:\/\/ispt.eu\/news\/220-million-for-development-new-circular-plastic-systems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Groeifonds<\/a> for Circular Plastics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-e6ab74fe-dfad-4979-8c85-0b73d1fbb6d2\">The first keynote was given by Jacqueline Vaessen, chairman of the National Platform Plastics Recycling (NPPR): \u201cIn 2050 we want to be climate neutral. Meaning, in 2030 we will need to achieve 1 Mton CO<sub>2<\/sub>-eq reduction (from 2018) and use 50% less primary raw materials.\u200b Lady&#8217;s and gentlemen, I can tell you: it is nearly impossible. Yet the circular plastics industry has received an enormous boost to make the plastic value chain more sustainable: over the next 8 years we can use \u20ac540 million to&nbsp;accelerate the circular plastic society. <strong>We have the granting, now we need the people. Let&#8217;s work together to put the Netherlands on the map in circular plastics.<\/strong>\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-e0fb7d58-7ab5-4385-a110-244dbbdd5a64\">Jacqueline&#8217;s keynote was followed by a panel discussion with Thor Tummers, prof. We need to take action now, and that&#8217;s why we are here today. We have invited speakers with bold opinions on how to move forward in polymer recycling. So let&#8217;s get into it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>In 5 years, I want the world to look at all of us here today as an example for collaboration that made the world a better place.<\/p>\n<cite>Gijs Langeveld &#8211; Managing Director at Polymer Science Park<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chemical depolymerization<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Chemical recycling is an emerging sector in developing innovative new technologies that turn plastic waste into base chemicals, monomers and feedstocks. In this session, future perspectives and business opportunities were discussed for the chemical recycling of polyesters and polyamides. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The session was moderated by dr. Jan Jager, Lector circular plastics at NHL Stenden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The value chain and the business model(s)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This session was moderated by moderated by&nbsp;Jan Harm Urbanus, Senior research scientist circular plastics at TNO. Kim Ragaert shares how she thinks the <strong>future of plastics<\/strong> relies on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other innovative technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>AI is critical for perfect sorting and linking different sensor technologies to each other<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New techniques like Magnetic Density Separation (MDS) give good results on the recovery of mixed plastic sorting<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-7b668e7b-83fa-4c24-a87d-13d23b476de3\">Circular Plastics Roadmap 2.0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-546762de-0783-4f61-9d25-959229544340\">Some final words are dedicated to the <a href=\"https:\/\/ispt.eu\/news\/the-circular-plastics-initiative-delivers-its-roadmap-and-you-can-be-part-of-the-journey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Circular Plastics Roadmap<\/a>, an interactive document that shows what steps will be needed to create a future where recycling has replaced incineration as the norm. The roadmap isn\u2019t just a timeline with milestones. It also sets out a vision for the future and shows how it can be realized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CPI is busy developing a <strong>Circular Plastic Roadmap 2.0,<\/strong> of course using today&#8217;s insights.
