ISPT and AlgaePARC partners start new project on Algae biorefinery

Building forward on the outcome of the AlgaePARC and ISPT biorefinery ideation activities, Wageningen University and Research Centre and ISPT started an initiative to bring together new partners for a breakthrough project on biorefinery to extract valuable components and as a result provide a profitable business case.
Biorefinery of microalgae does not exist! This is an essential step to turn microalgae biotechnology into a large commercial activity due to economic and sustainable reasons. Production and biorefinery of microalgae biomass need to be integrated due to the need of biomass supply and variability of biomass properties with the strain and process used. Presently at AlgaePARC, Wageningen UR and a wide consortium of 18 industrial partners focus on biomass production . ISPT and Wageningen UR will proceed with this strategy with a focus on biorefinery of microalgal biomass.
On the 6th of December more than 40 institutes and interested partners from industry gathered for an initial exploration of possible project themes, consisting of research at laboratory and pilot scale to develop new continuous and scalable technology and processes to fractionate microalgae biomass into the different components (lipids, proteins and carbohydrates), while keeping its functionality and minimizing the energy.
Project themes:
• Basic knowledge
• Heterotrophic algae cultivation on residual streams
• Harvesting
• Cell Disruption
• Extraction
• Fractionation
• Systems Analysis and Sustainability assessment
The project asks for: mild and efficient harvesting and cell disruption technologies for proteins and carbohydrates; effective extraction technologies for separation of hydrophilic (carbohydrates, proteins) and hydrophobic (lipids) compounds; Reduce energy consumption, improve environmental performance, decrease of capital costs and Integrate knowledge & facilities for oil, food and chemical industry in a continuous biorefinery concept.
